Why do I need a septic system and sewer scope inspection?

There are several reasons you should consider a septic and sewer system inspection, from leaks to age. Common signs of sewer or pipe system issues often include water backing up inside of the house, soft or shifting ground outside of the house, and extra-green patches of grass. If you live in a home that is at least 25 years or older, you may have clay pipes or a pipe system that is more suspectable of breaking down. Not only do these problems require unique expertise to identify, but also a skilled technician with specialty experience to fix them. It is also important to be wary of large trees nearby as deep roots can penetrate your sewer line, causing small cracks or clogging up the system.

What is a sewer scope inspection?

A sewer scope is the inspection of the sewer lateral line from the house to the municipal or city connection with a camera. This technique is used to identify defects in the lateral that can impede proper sewage drainage. While you can look for potential signs of sewer line damage around sensitive areas of your home, including backed-up water or leaks, only a professional sewer scope can reveal fundamental issues in the sewer line itself.

How much does a sewer line inspection cost?

A sewer line inspection can vary depending on how comprehensive the inspection is. At CHC Home Inspections, we offer different sewer line inspection options that allow you to customize a service for your needs. While sewer line inspections can seem costly upfront, they are significantly less expensive than the home repairs that can follow if a sewer line break or septic system issue goes unnoticed. Once problems are identified, a plan of attack can be made for repairs and further prevention in the future.

sewer scope with camera

This inspection will identify the defect in the lateral which can impede proper sewage drainage. If any issues are detected, we will provide recommendations for repair and prevention. We will also locate and mark the locations above ground of defects with flags for your reference. This service will be added to the plumbing section within your home inspection report and will note any defects found to need repair.

tank locating

Just moved into a new home with a buried septic system but don’t know where it is located? Locating your septic tank is the first step to any septic inspection, but we also offer it as a limited service if the location is your main concern. This option may use a transmitter, sewer camera, and/or probing to locate the tank and will include a simple, professional sketch so the tank can be easily located in the future.

line & tank inspection

This service includes an inspection of the sewer line from the house to the septic tank, excavation, and inspection of the tank liquid levels. We will evaluate the performance of the tank based on the liquid levels as well as determine if pumping is needed. Any accessible/visible tank components, such as access lids, risers, baffles, and inlets/outlets will also be inspected. The line and tank inspection also feature a visual-only inspection of the drain field above grade.

Line, Tank, Distribution, & Drain Field Inspection

This service includes the above options as well as a camera sewer scope inspection from the tank to the distribution box and a camera inspection to each of the lateral lines. This is the most detailed inspection of your private wastewater treatment system and features its own detailed, professional report.
